FG-1 CameraLink Frame Grabber

The FG-1 CubeSat CameraLink Frame Grabber is a high-performance imaging solution specifically designed for space applications. This project showcases my expertise in developing advanced embedded systems capable of withstanding the harsh conditions of space. The FG-1 is optimized for seamless integration with a variety of camera systems, providing reliable and high-quality image capture for CubeSats.

Technical Features and Capabilities

  • Flash-Based FPGA: Central to the FG-1 is a Flash-based FPGA, which offers superior radiation tolerance compared to SRAM-based alternatives. This technology ensures dependable performance in the radiation-rich environment of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) and enhances system longevity.
  • High-Resolution Image Processing: The FG-1 supports the CameraLink interface, enabling the handling of high-resolution image data, ideal for Earth observation, scientific research, and other space applications requiring detailed imaging.
  • Versatile Data Handling: It features multiple data interfaces, including SPI, QSPI, LVDS, and Ethernet, allowing for flexible data processing and transmission. This versatility facilitates integration with various satellite systems, accommodating different mission needs.
  • Space-Optimized Design: The board is engineered with robust thermal management and radiation-hardening techniques, ensuring reliable operation under extreme temperature fluctuations and radiation exposure.
  • Customizability and Scalability: The FG-1 supports customizable configurations, including a MIPI-CSI-2 interface with multi-lane support, adaptable to specific mission requirements and scalable for various payload sizes.

Environmental Testing

The FG-1 has undergone rigorous environmental testing to ensure its durability and functionality in space. It has been tested for:

  • Vibration: To withstand the mechanical stresses during launch, including random and sinusoidal vibrations.
  • Pyroshock: To simulate the shock environment experienced during stage separations and other explosive events.
  • Thermal Vacuum: To ensure reliable operation in the vacuum of space and across a broad temperature range.
  • EMC/EMI: To verify electromagnetic compatibility and ensure minimal interference with other satellite systems.
